Private or one-to-one Pilates means individual instruction. Our Medical Pilates service combines guided movement, breathing, core-stability work and postural training. Tell the office about your experience and movement goals so it can confirm the instructor and appointment type.
Previous Pilates experience is not required. Instruction can start with manageable movements and progress with your control. Ask whether mat-based work or Reformer Pilates is appropriate for the session, and confirm the equipment and instructor at your chosen office.
Pilates instruction develops movement skills, while a physical-therapy appointment includes a clinical assessment and rehabilitation planning. A posture assessment can support a discussion of training goals. These are separate appointment types; discuss injuries, surgery or activity restrictions before booking.
Contact Midtown Manhattan, Forest Hills in Queens or Great Neck on Long Island to ask about one-to-one Pilates fees, session length and availability. For a first session, ask about comfortable movement clothing, your goals and any relevant rehabilitation instructions.
A Pilates movement assessment can consider balance, flexibility, breathing coordination and trunk stability. Describe the activities you want to work on, including prolonged sitting or bending. Back discomfort and rehabilitation goals need individual assessment; a training goal does not establish a diagnosis or promise pain relief.
You can ask about a posture scan before Pilates and discuss how the observations relate to movement-control goals. AI 3D body composition and Pilates provide different information: a body-composition report describes measurements or estimates, while Pilates instruction works on movement. Ask which appointments are needed and how each is charged.
Your first session starts with a look at how you stand and move. Your instructor then chooses exercises for your current ability. These may include gentle stretches, balance work and movements for the arms, legs and core.
The pace and effort can change as your control improves. Wear comfortable clothes. Bring any advice you have been given after an injury or surgery. You can book in Midtown Manhattan, Forest Hills in Queens or Great Neck. Check each practitioner's profile for their locations.
SEE THE SERVICE
Pilates links slow, controlled movement with breathing and focus. Joseph Pilates developed it in the early 1900s and called it Contrology. Today, instructors adapt the exercises to each person's ability and goals.
How you move matters. Aim for steady breathing and a range that feels comfortable. Move between positions with control. Core exercises work the muscles around your trunk that support movement.
Your instructor looks at your balance, flexibility and movement. Talk about daily tasks you want to work on, such as sitting, bending or walking. Your symptoms, posture and health history help guide the plan.
Your instructor shows each exercise, watches you practise and gives feedback. Exercises may use a mat or equipment. The range, pace and effort can change as you learn.
A session may include core work, stretches and balance practice. Arm and leg movements can be part of the plan too. The aim is good control, rather than more effort alone. Keep breathing at a pace that feels manageable.
Review how you move and how daily tasks feel. If you are recovering from surgery or injury, follow your medical limits and rehab plan. A Pilates visit and a physical therapy assessment are separate appointments.

Pilates may be one exercise option for long-term low-back pain. Your plan should fit your assessment, goals and medical limits. Results vary from person to person.
2016 · Cochrane systematic review republication
Pilates improved pain and disability compared with minimal intervention in the included low-back-pain trials. Evidence was low to moderate quality; superiority over other exercise was not established. This republishes the 2015 Cochrane review.
2023 · Systematic review and meta-analysis
The review found improvements in pain and disability with Pilates training for chronic low-back pain. Programs and comparisons varied. Findings do not guarantee correction of posture or a result for every participant.
2023 · Systematic review
Pilates could improve core-muscle measures compared with no exercise or differently dosed exercise programs. It was not inferior to equivalently dosed exercise; the findings do not establish that Pilates is uniquely superior.
